A snack crawling with nostalgia

by The 100 Companies

Today is National Ants on a Log Day, celebrating the classic snack of celery, peanut butter and raisins.

Celery is about 95% water, which helps give the “log” its crisp crunch, while peanut butter adds protein and raisins bring natural sweetness and a little fiber. The snack’s exact inventor is unknown, but peanut butter-filled celery appeared in a 1946 Girl Scout cookbook, and the name “ants on a log” showed up in print by 1959.

Its appeal is part nutrition, part nostalgia and part presentation: three ordinary ingredients suddenly look like a tiny forest scene kids are happy to eat.
